I was so looking forward to this but unfortuntely got the dreaded lurghy which Pete refers to as girl flu - whatever it was there was no way with legs that wouldn't work, a streaming cold and sore throat that I was going to make it. I missed a good night according to my man and was sorry not to see you all, thanks for the cards.

Would like to thank mick, ken and everyone involved in giving us a night/venue to be proud of....Looking forward to 'hip hug her' 2009. As always thanks to the 'usuals' for their company....superb! Well Western was..... western. Unfortunately (and this may well be due to my state of mind more than anything else at the moment) and no disrespect to anyone, but it just didnt work for me. It was lovely to catch up with some peeps but many of the people i was hoping to see, for various different reasons, didnt make it which was a bit of a shame. I dont know the name of the guy who seemed to have a problem with the cuein, maybe it was nerves or somehting but he really needs to sort it out bless him. Appologies to pete for leaving before the end of his set as he was really at that point beigining to kick arse and save the night(for me anyway) but by that time I had done too much sitting and just couldn't recover my enthusiasm. Other appologies for people to tried to have a sensible conversation with me and found it like getting blood out of a stone lol sorry guys perhaps santa will leave some sparkle in my chrismas stocking and next time i see you i will be back on track.
Look forward to seeing you all out and about in the new year. Take care all!

Hope it went well. There were lots of posts prior to the event and wonder if we could have a run down as to how it went from the organisers, etc as could not make it.

I was going to post yesterday but was so dog tired when I got home, decided to night would be better & I'm glad I did after reading the two different report's above. So if you've read both which one do you take notice of. Well, if I'm honest & I all way's am when it come's to venue report's, both are right in there own way. Darren did'nt do justice to the record's he's got in his box on Saturday, the bad cueing up of record's and his set in general should of been a lot better & I'll take the hit for that one. If you'ed seen him when he first played for us in Oct', he did'nt put a foot wrong. Lesson learnt for next time. As for Pete "saving" the night for you deb's, that's your opinion & that's fine but what about the 3 DJ's that where on before.Paul, Wazz & Mace mixed it up nicely (playlist's at the end of this). Deb's, you're right in bit's but I can't help thinking that your bad night out was due to your lack of enthusiasm in the first place. Steve, appreciate the comment's also,I don't think there were any duff track's played, what people have to realise is that there's going to be 'nighter sound's as well as soul night record's mixed together at this once a year event. There was over 40 do's advertised at least for last weekend & we had in 92 not including the DJ's & guest's, we're happy with that as it's enabled us to carry on next year but I can't help wondering if there's other people out there who have different view's as well. Put them up here for me to read & be honest, I won't be offended!! Ken & myself are passionate about this venue, there's a bit of work to do for next year but nothing that can't be sorted. Which just leave's me to say, a massive thank you to all of you who have supported us this year. Have a great Xmas & even better New Year. Play List's Top Five Record's Paul Gerri Diamond-Only you Frank Butler- The love I need The Shadow's- Together again Willie Hightower- Because I love you Joy's of life- Goodtime's are over
Wazz Exportation's- I want you Adorable's- Ooh boy Jame's Walsh-Cuz it's you girl Darrow Fletcher- What good am I The Twan's- I can't see him again
Mace Rufus Lumley- Minneaplis, Minnesota Nat Hall- You don't know Herb Johnson - cu Little John- Heart breaking time Toni Washington- Good things

Technically not my finest hour and sorry to all who where expecting and should have got better. Mick you dont have to take the hit for it, its my fault I was away with fairies and let a few external factors affect me. As for the rest of the djs I thought they were on form and all played good sets, Pete did play a fantastic set but to say it saved the night is not fair on the other 3 who did themselves proud not to mention Mick & Ken. However I must say no one can be more dissapointed than myself to read such feedback although I did expect it, no excuses from me and I will speak to Mick & Ken today and appologise in person.

This is the very first time i have ever posted a message. My opinion of Weston is that it leaves me confused whether its a Mod nighter or it's a proper Soul night? Some tracks that are played, i wouldn't get out of bed for, it seems watered down soul is in vogue, with many venues playing Blue Eyed soul, or something that has that beating rhythm. For me, it's the vocals that are important, not that beating rhythm, Soul is Black! Soul music is a broad church, with many different facets which at best, are objective, but there is a wealth of good soulful tunes which never get the light of day, from the 70's 80's, that's a crime! ( I don't mean funk) My last visit to Bridgwater i was introduced to soulful house, i wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry? Also they had a D.j who had to talk at the end of every track, which was not the best idea as he held the mic to close, so i couldn't understand what he was saying. (Same D.j has Played at Weston & Exeter) The set up of their sound was poor, and clarity was missing, very unusual for Cath & Pete's doo's, so your not alone Mick. I would like to visit a club who's enthesis was on quality Soul, who played tracks that made you feel blessed, which were packed with soul, whether they were dancers or not? I like to dance to soul but also like to sit an appreciate, a quality slow track! (This is not catered for at any venue i have been to) I think it takes real guts to run a soul night, i take my hat off to you. I'm sure there is bags of work involved and sleepless nights probably. I would also like to say Cath at Bridgwater really welcomes people on arrival, and for me it's probably the best for soulful content!

well i have to say that this thread is refreshing Ok its critical but both the critics and the promoter has approached it in a sensible way and not got ass-y about it.
good honest appraisals to the common end of having a great night for the promoter and the punter, but still staying real to the cause.
I am fed up of reading reviews by promoters of their own events which bear no resemblance to what actually occurred.

I havent managed to get out and about for a bit so didnt make it down to Western this time. This venue holds some very special memories for me and although I try to attend without bias it is a little hard for me. I think its fair to say that no matter which venue you attend you will have good and bad nights! Not always the fault of the promoters and djs, sometimes just a state of mind, quite simply 'You can please some of the folks some of the time, you can please all of the folks some of the time but you will never please all of the folk all of the time'
Have a very merry christmas wherever you are, and see you all some time in the new year xx

aha the swsc forum has a debate !...lets all keep it honest BUT without offence and bickering like some other forums can slip into.... on the whole i enjoyed the night as i have before ...a great venue and a friendly regular crowd although some were missing but its that time of the year when money is short and there are nights on everywhere so i think 92 paying punters is a result...
as for the djs...while i agree pete was the one who made me dance most...mace did play an excellent rnb set ...i missed kens set and left half way thru micks but that was cos id been up till 4 the night before....as for darren and wazz in my opinion they both played some BIG tunes...but lacked a little get up and go which is needed early on in the night when a lot of people seem to be more interseted in drinking than dancin, or had been up nearly allnight before !... i like my djs to be enthusiastic whatever the time of night or amount of people on the floor which is why the likes of sean and des are my faves (aswell as the great tunes they spin!)...darren,if i had 'naughty boy' id be shouting it down the mic !! ...if its early and not many people are dancin a couple of techical faults and it can make it hell and a dj can perform even worse makin mistakes or choosing spins they wouldnt if the floor was full and they were on a roll...imo....
it was a NIGHTER where all types of soul are played, you cannot go and expect to like all the tunes !!
like i said at the beginning i enjoyed the night and will be back again in the new year...
i hope i havnt offended anyone....
merry xmas.... ;D

I was not there so not know what was played. Would like to say to Darren, do not dwell too much on your technical issues as you will learn from saturday and gain in confidence with practice. Do not beat yourself up too much. We all been there mate. A bigger issue, IMHO and I was not there and not know what you played, is putting whatever you have into a coherent set. Not matter whether you have big or small tunes. That is the harder bit IMHO. Good luck .
As for Soulful tunes played out or not, Martin they are at venues such as Burnley, but on the whole DJ's are pre occupied with keeping the floor full as if not goes against there competence, rightly or wrongly. If you had come to the last Berkeley and early doors you would have heard that from me. Also whenever I get opportunity its what I want to play. Soul music is what its whats its all about. In general , soulful tunes are played early doors, IMO.
Merry Xmas and a happy new year to you all.

Lots of different opinions, but I enjoyed the night, and thought all D.J.'s did a good job, thought that Darren played a set of class oldies (top work, fella!!) I'll be honest and say that I'm not into nostalgia of any form and want to to hear something FRESH, RAW, EXCITING and Mace did it for me with the Herb Johnson (shall I tell everybody what it is??)
