Mick if you read my initial comments it does say "no disrespect to anyone" I am not slateing any of the djs who played prior to Pete, each to thier own and I hope nobody takes offence. But I do feel that there were times during the night that the boxes took presedent over the dance floor. I know how difficult it can be (Ive been a promoter myself remember). I just said that it didn't on this particular night work for 'me'. It is my firm belief that as promoter it is far better to hear everybodys genuine comments on how they felt about the night as this is far more constructive and is much better for the scene as a whole. There is nothing worse than speaking to people at a venue and them saying that they think the music is a bit bland or iffy or something along those lines and then seeing them post a kiss arse review to gain favor with the promoter. (Please not i am not refering to anyone on here). You may be right to a certain degree about my state of mind, i said that myself, but i was really up for a good night,- by god i needed it - so it cant be totaly down to a lack of enthusiasm on my part. Well I hope you all have a great christmas!
PLEASE YOU GUYS, AS INDIVIDUALS DO NOT TAKE OFFENCE TO GENERAL COMMENTS BEING MADE ON THIS THREAD, YOU CAN NOT ALWAYS EXPECT TO HAVE GOOD REVIEWS AND IT IS BETTER TO HEAR PEOPLES REAL OPINION THAT HAVE THEM SLAGGING YOU OFF BEHIND YOU BACK. AND BOY OH BOY IS IT GOOD TO HAVE A DEBATE ONE HERE RATHER THAN THE SAME OLD KISS ARSE COMMENTS !!!!

aha the swsc forum has a debate !...lets all keep it honest BUT without offence and bickering like some other forums can slip into.... on the whole i enjoyed the night as i have before ...a great venue and a friendly regular crowd although some were missing but its that time of the year when money is short and there are nights on everywhere so i think 92 paying punters is a result... as for the djs...while i agree pete was the one who made me dance most...mace did play an excellent rnb set ...i missed kens set and left half way thru micks but that was cos id been up till 4 the night before....as for darren and wazz in my opinion they both played some BIG tunes...but lacked a little get up and go which is needed early on in the night when a lot of people seem to be more interseted in drinking than dancin, or had been up nearly allnight before !... i like my djs to be enthusiastic whatever the time of night or amount of people on the floor which is why the likes of sean and des are my faves (aswell as the great tunes they spin!)...darren,if i had 'naughty boy' id be shouting it down the mic !! ...if its early and not many people are dancin a couple of techical faults and it can make it hell and a dj can perform even worse makin mistakes or choosing spins they wouldnt if the floor was full and they were on a roll...imo.... it was a NIGHTER where all types of soul are played, you cannot go and expect to like all the tunes !! like i said at the beginning i enjoyed the night and will be back again in the new year... i hope i havnt offended anyone.... merry xmas.... ;D DID I MISUNDERSTAND OR ARE YOU SAYING IM NOT ENTHUSIASTIC IF SO YOUR TALKING BOLL**KS, NEVER BEFORE HAVE I BEEN CALLED UN ENTHUSIASTIC IN OVER 30 YEARS ON THIS SCENE, AND YES I DO TAKE OFFENCE TO IT, THE WAY I READ IT I STAND BEHIND THE DECKS HANDS IN POCKETS LOOKING MISERABLE DO I,. DONT FU**ING THINK SO WAZZ wazz...never said you looked bored although i could name djs who do...but wont...just get in trouble ....sorry i offended you im sure youre as enthusiastic about soul as any of us...was just describing the type of dj thats really gets me off my arse even if im f***** from the night before....thats my opinion which is what these forums are for....or so i thought....dont wanna make an enemy of someone ive never even met !!...if you ever hear me play feel free to give your opinion good ,bad or indifferent....hope if we ever meet we can have a beer and a chat still !! ;D

I havent managed to get out and about for a bit so didnt make it down to Western this time. This venue holds some very special memories for me and although I try to attend without bias it is a little hard for me. I think its fair to say that no matter which venue you attend you will have good and bad nights! Not always the fault of the promoters and djs, sometimes just a state of mind, quite simply 'You can please some of the folks some of the time, you can please all of the folks some of the time but you will never please all of the folk all of the time' Have a very merry christmas wherever you are, and see you all some time in the new year xx I agree lynds,a night that works for one person may not hit the mark for someone else (for whatever reason)...No right or wrong just a difference of opinion and our opinions are all valid and of use....Always interesting to read how others have viewed a night..long may it continue. I am off now before kerry catches me on the computer...I am meant to be cooking lunch... ;D Merry christmas everyone and heres to loads of great nights/nighters in 2009. steve

First of all, sorry for not replying a lot earlier, have been working 12 hour day's since last Sat',those of you who are self-employed will know what I mean!!! Well, a proper debate on SWS at last, thank's for all the feedback(Mike & Cath will be pleased!). I'll try & answer all your point's that I believe need to be sorted. Soulmanruffin, we should meet up & chew the fat on a few of your issue's, most of which I agree on(soulful tune's that never see the light of day etc), as for being confused, we do not consider ourselve's either a mod nighter or proper soul night but then it all depend's on what you consider to be a proper soul night. You give some hint's in your theard but up here in the West Mid's I have seen more quality soul night's come & go over the year's, playing exactly what you want to hear & it's the same old story, not enough support at the end of the day. As for slow track's not getting played that night, well that's up to the DJs to work into there set but soulful slowie's are not in vogue at the moment at a lot of venue's(main set's I'm on about here, not your early spot's) it's probably no consolation now but I had Wade Flemon's, Teddy Randazzo, Bobbi Smith & Jimmie Reed Jnr pulled out but could'nt fit them in. Lynd's, you summed it up nicely & was'nt even there(no dig intended, to much going on in B'mouth these day's) Life & Soul, glad you liked the honest approach & as you say "still staying real to the cause". We have to, from the early day's of Heavenly Blocked when Jon Drake started it all at the Atlantic up to the present, it's been bloody hard work but hey, that's promoting. Don't know if I got the wrong end of the stick with comment's from other post's but there was nothing wrong technically or otherwise with the sound system, I personally make sure it's crystal clear unlike other system's I've heard up north. Once again, thank's for all the reply's.Ken & myself still have to work out a couple of date's for this year in what is proving to be a very packed calender so we'll keep you posted. Before I finally end though, let me leave you with this question, bearing in mind we will probably aim for 2 soul night's & the nighter this year, who would you like to see DJing, local or otherwise.
Happy Soulful New Year to you all.

sorry mick....i mentioned technical faults....not with the sound system itself.....its a spot on sound....i meant there were some silent breaks between songs that were a tad too long ...they were down to the dj having probs ...technically....i really didnt get my points across very well with that post...but then i did fail my english exam all them years ago....maybe i shouldnt bother ;D...see you in the new year

How encouraging it is to hear, a promoter who's not only prepared to listen to other soulies, but has opened the door to us, asking which D.j's we would prefer, for his up and coming shindigs! I have to say I'm impressed Mick, I would like for whoever is chosen as D.j's, to come out of the D.j box and play some real Soulful tunes, not middle of the road stuff. The en thesis is on Vocal soulfulness not a track that sound Northernish, but could be sixties pop! I know it is a difficult ask as you are playing to the dance floor, and one persons want list maybe totally different to another's. The Soul scene is far healthier for promoters, D.j's & punters, having their own input, thus obtaining Soulful satisfaction.

I would like to add that I was at the last couple of these and I got to say after the previous one this was not quite so enjoyable but then the one in sept was somthing a little bit special the music and atmosphere was brilliant. This time i thought the djs all played some great tunes and when I heard Pete Lyster and Darren Brown were playing at the allnighter I was really looking forward to it, but for me it never got going like the previous one but still we all enjoyed it and had a great time staying over. As for the noninating djs these are ones I would always travel to see Locally Pete Lyster, Darren Brown, and nationally John Parker, Andy Dyson, Maria O are the ones I would like brought to the south west . Happy New Year luv Kaz xx
