We use 3 Soul Websites , Soul Source,Southern Soul and Southwest Soul Club , So I am going to review Riverside Soul night and copy and paste this to all 3!
Seldom do I feel 3/4s through the night I want to go home and share my views with other “soulies” but tonight was an exception.
Doing the early shift was Mike and Tony Venn AKA The Venn Brothers, these guys played Northern and Tamla sounds to an empty floor at times as did Sue resident Motown DJ , Numbers in the early evening was very dissapointing, and us that were there early doors appreciated the choons being played!
Guest DJ Steve Lloyd came on and to be frank wowed us with his classics and 70s mix of choons, comments were made to me , ye its ok but it music to read the Sunday paper too! How wrong can you be! This is a guy whom stands by his musical beliefs and has the balls to play a mix of new and old choons to an audience of people sometimes too set in their ways to change and to be honest I’m one! Until tonight!!
Mike our host then played his big choons to a filling up dance floor only to be surpassed by the one and only Des Parker, We read about top DJs and I’m not going to name names but Des IMHO has to be one of the best Northern Soul DJs on the continent if not the world – His choons had seasoned DJs in the audience running for a glimpse at his wares! Immense choons just sprang out of his box , the guy is a Maestro! Running for cover Sue and Mike did the last hour and the pair uttered how do we follow that! But they did and kept the floor alive until Jimmy Radcliffe echoed out the last choon at 2am!
WHAT A NIGHT!
