Dont get me wrong we admire anyone that takes the time and effort to organise any sort of 'do' / function -
To say we were a tad pi$$ed off after driving to Torquay from Gloucester , checking into the hotel , demolishing our evening meal and heading downstairs to the vaults for our evening of Soul.
Casually wandering over to the stage to peruse the set up,shock horror , a CD Mixer , boxes of CDs , no decks nor a piece of beloved vinyl in sight!! - To then be welcomed to Torquays ONLY Northern Soul Venue. Dont get me wrong I like Tommy Neals going to a happening but to hear it 4 times off CD wears a bit thin, also the other run of the mill and i use the term loosely Northern Soul tracks that seemed almost at times to be on REPEAT on the CD player!
However, there was a glimmer of hope as 2 TOP guys namely Ian and Steve arrived with some decks and their beloved vinyl AND hastily after setting up they were both given their "set" times! Alas seemingly having to play second fiddle to Mr CD!!!
In the face of adversity(an amp that kept dropping out,a mixer that appeared if you went anywhere near the volume control sent ear shattering crackles through the system) Ian and Steve played quality sets of Northern,Motown and R & B alas the majority being wasted on and I wasnt going to mention it, THE HANDBAG CROWD.(Again each to their own)
Like I said at the start nothing but admiration for organisers , but as a lot of people travelled from Cornwall,Minehead,Gloucester ,Guest DJs from Taunton and Bristol and various other places across the south west it would have been nice if it had been advertised truthfully as A CD EVENING OF HANDBAG SOUL ,ENHANCED (WHEN ALLOWED ON THE STRICT DJing TIMETABLE) BY PURE CLASS VINYL CHOONS
However we did meet some great people and also bumped into a few the following night @ BRIDGWATER(ahh I feel a totally differnt thread coming on!!!!!!!!)
So Im sorry, as much as we love Torquay as a place we will not be going to Torquay Soul III IV V VI etc but would like to wish all concerned success for the future.
