Hey Only just found this site, hi everybody - great work on the whole thing Pip, congratulations. I run a monthly funk and soul night in Falmouth at The Watermans on the first Friday of every month. - FREE ENTRY
- STRICTLY 45s - NO CDs!
- GOOD PARKING (Straight outside)
- OUTSIDE SEATING
- CHEAP DRINKS!
I play everything from popular classics by artistes like JB, Jackie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Aretha, etc, to deeper funk and soul like Vernon Garrett, Renaldo Domino, Barbara Lynn, Luther Ingram, Syl Johnson, etc - I like to keep it all pre-1973 or so, with few exceptions. No slap bass or disco kicks, just down'n'dirty funky soul. It closes between 11:30pm and 12:30pm, depending on how busy it is. Anyone interested in getting involved or DJing, drop me a mail. Map : maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&q=watermans&near=falmouth,+uk&ie=UTF8&ll=50.154934,-5.069879&spn=0.004846,0.009978&z=17&om=1 Thanks a lot and I hope to see you there. Krz

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I've been doing it for 3 years there now and when I started Fridays were full of chavs that wanted 50 Cent or d&b and were mystified as to why I only had old 45's; now it's irratic - sometimes everyones dancing and the place is packed, other times I have a hard time getting a floor at all. I was playing Gloria Jones - "Tainted Love" last month and a guy in his 50s strolled up and asked if I could play the original "you know, the one by that Almond fella"...and that is indicative. Is this normal? Should hairs really be growing here? The heart of the problem is the lack of like minded soulies; I can sustain a floor indefinitely usually as long as I play really popular stuff, Aretha, Wilson Pickett, etc. The soon as I move into uncharted waters things get harder, unless there's 4-5 people with a little love in the audience and then everything works out fine. It doesn't take much to make it a really good night out. There is a rational explaination for this too. I'm 30 and I've been DJing for a long time, my Dad was a DJ. I've wound up playing a form of music that I didn't grow up with in any way or have any friends that really share the same interest - so, musically I feel like a bit of an island now. I'm very culturally disconnected from it all; I'll tell you truthfully now - I've never been to a proper soul night. Ever. I didn't really understand what Northern Soul was properly until 5 or 6 years ago, before that it was "stuff that sounds kinda Motown". I've tried hard to educate myself with it all, but I feel like I'm getting to a point where I need some people around that share my passion and no doubt know a lot more than I. Thanks for your offer Deano, my missus has been away for the best part of a month and comes back the day before so I don't reckon I can make it to Exeter; that said, it's something that's certainly on my list to do soon. I'm getting on the flyer tip soon, thanks for your offer; I need the help.

sounds a really good night...we're up in Liskeard but have friends near Falmouth (penryn) who'd enjoy it ... We do a funk and soul night up in Liskeard once a month ..have just started out so are on a learning curve ..at least your chavs want to dance , all ours do is pick fights with the proper punters, as deano discovered

Hi Pip and Jo Good to hear from you (I live in Penryn). Thanks for you offers of help Pip, I hope to take you up on it soon - I want to get it moving and I want a more soulful class of punter. I hope to meet up with all you folk soon - you've got a great little community here and people have been nothing but friendly since I arrived - thanks a lot. Tony & Jo might ward you off after they've been tonight! I don't think I've ever had anyone stay in a hotel to go to the night...I feel honour/shamed of the little I have to offer but you guys are a fountain of knowledge and I'm most greatful for all the help I've been offered. See you later!

ok, heres the run down I have pm Damon, so he knows what we thought, not that it should matter one little bit ;D The venue is a town centre pub just by the river, very pretty views. It was busy, and a hen night was going on, with a stripper, This only happens occasionally, and was 'interesting' ;D, haven't seen a male stripper for years. Music played by Damon, was early funk, this is a difficult thing to get to grips with, he has a passion for it, you can tell, anyone with a passion for music , whatever it is, has to be commended. We didn't hear any soul, but we left before the end. I understand that the tempo picks up a lot towards the latter end of the night, and lots of soul is played and im sorry we missed that bit, people were up dancing ive been told, so shame we went early. we actually thought 'no soul' was going to be played as we were there for a couple of hours We are going again, and this time we promise to stay to the end.
