What are peoples views on Northern and Soul nights playing CDs and not vinyl, i know its ideal if its all on original vinyl and some people view CDs as the anti-christ but surely the most important thing is having a good night with good people, good dancing and listening to great music (CD or Vinyl). I only ask this after a recent debate with a friend who said he wouldnt go to a night that played northern on CD, and it set me wondering what other soulies thought.

very hot topic this one. I personally stick to vinyl and OVO. Most people just want to have a good time but for me you can play your CD's at home and playing bootlegs is just plain cheating by the DJ. I also think the promoter should be clear as to what they is offering.

Have to admit im not a total purist and am quite happy to go to a venue playing CDs as all i want to do is enjoy the music. I fully appreciate that some people want to live the whole vinyl thing but do agree with you that the promoter should make it clear what they are playing so people can make their own decision if they want to go or not. But the great thing about music is that theres something for everyone, ive got a lot of mates who havnt got any idea what northern is all about until i try and explain and end up loaning out CDs to give them a taste of what their missing, ive even gained a few converts this way. Great your converting people. Heard the original Frank Wilson (one of two known copies) at the weekend and the crackles of the vinyl made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - such joy.

Has to be vinyl for me as its a rare soul scene and the tunes are hard to find on original vinyl it makes that more special when going to an OVO event. You appreciate the DJ for sourcing a copy and paying good money for it. Also remember they may have. Spent the best of 45 years building a collection. Playing a cd is simply cheating however I wouldn't get too hung up on reissues otherwise you would never get to hear some of the rarest sounds unless you attended the events where the owners of these records djd. I own vinyl and cds and strangely enough I play my cds in preference in the my home or in the car. There's just something special about seeing a DJ turn up at a soul night and wondering what magic tunes hes going to play from that box.

clap clap Ian OVO is the only way . Put it this way...If there is a chance to see the real mona lisa at £6 and next door you can see a copy of it for £5, which line would you be in ? cd's at events are simply wrong and cheating, there is a cd night in Plymouth charging £5, yet you can hear the real thing at the Parkway for £6, you pay your hard earnt money and take your choice ! Its down to Promoters to book the dj's with the records and not to compromise their night . Stop supporting cd nights

One argument always put up is that they cannot afford the records - have seen recently the real record cheaper than the 'boot' - just put it all down to lazy DJing and I think some of these characters think a deck, some mates, some bootlegs or CD's equals a soul night, not sure it is about the soul for them, and then they pick a date to clash with a long term event who's dates are done a year in advance.

Think i need to rephrase some of my comments before you all gang up on me . I was brought up on vinyl and love it to bits and still have a large collection of records, cds will never match the enjoyment of sliding the vinyl out of the sleeve checking for scratches and hearing the unmistakable sound of the needle dropping into that groove, theres something very special about that. I also have a very large collection of Northern, Motown, 60s Soul and Ska CDs about a 1000 at the last count which i could never of collected on vinyl. I totally agree with you all that the big and regular northern nights are so much more special by the fact that everything is on vinyl and wouldnt want it any different, in fact when im telling my non soulie mates about it thats the 1st big point i make. What i was trying to ask in my 1st post was more aimed at smaller clubs and pubs using CDs as an introduction to get people listening to Northern and old Soul and hopefully whetting their appetite into wanting to hear more and maybe travel to the bigger and better nights, so surely CDs serve a purpose in this. Anyway i just love my music and love to lose myself into my northern and when thats on i can be in my own world for 3 minutes when all that matters is the beat the rhythm and the lyrics. Happy Dancing People and KTF

There are many decent soul nights up and down the country playing OVO, The scene has always been underground, god help us all if it becomes mainstream. Wouldn't want to hear soul music in pubs and clubs on every street corner. When i was young we had to search out the music, travel 100s of miles every weekend, while my freinds were listening to showwaddy waddy, and the bay city rollers. I think it should be the same today, at the Plymouth soul night last sat, a young lad turned up aged 24, on his own, with a sixties style hair cut and slick looking suit, he found the music himself, travels about all over the country following it, just like i did, and that's what i want to see

Agree CD's a good way to introduce sounds and many clubs give away free CD's to show the style of music they play but unfortunately I would not attend a CD event as after collecting vinyl, sourcing, swapping etc., since the mid sixties only the real think and OVO will do for me.

original vinyl only.... djs all have different bank balances and different taste..this combination means their playboxes should be different which makes travelling to different nites to hear them part of the fun and part of the original scenes way of doin it....if we all played cds we'd all have the same tracks..this would bore me personally
i havnt got a big bank balance so will never play out some of my favourite tracks this just makes it more special when i know a dj who has..
and collecting original vinyl on a budget is also a buzz when you pick up a killer for a few quid (there are loads out there!)which you cant stop playing and fills the floor
as far as cd gigs converting people in my opinion i think they probably keep more people away from other nights, especially in a recession as most are in pubs and free entry so some may save themselves a few quid and stay local?
there are more than enough nites on playing original vinyl every weekend all over the country..cds should stay in the car and the hi fi

Some good posts on this topic but at the end of the day there is only one way to go..Original Vinyl.I've had people ask me and my partner for spots at Bournemouth Uni soul nights and our answer is quite simple..Can you do 2 spots with original vinyl? They leave it after that. I've collected original vinyl for years now.I don't earn a lot so have to save up to buy my records.I feel i'm cheating the paying public if i don't play originals and would hope thats why i get the occasional booking. I have dj'ed at venues where i know the other dj's play boots/cd's but thats up to them as i know some of the tunes they play can easily be aquired on original for around the same price.
