With another 'rip off Britain'budget looming,it reminds us how much superb value the northern soul scene really is, where can u get 5 hours of top quality soul entertainment for around a fiver!!! Sometimes to include 'top named' UKdjs, and often with giveaway CDs,buffets and the like. It strikes me that the cost of admin has'nt increased for sometime,I understand fully(having done promotions in the past.) The massive effort put into any event, the 'do it for the love'element, I notice a recent note re:door staff being employed, and a small cover charge for this,I'm well in favour if needed,(I also work in security.) If a promoter did increase the door to maybe a quid or two more,it may certainly help them recover some costs, employ 'named jocks' always a crowd puller! Could it also provide a 'talc tax' for those who use it,the carpets need cleaning, cleaners need.paying etc.when the 'casino' closed it cost about two quid to get in By my reckoning a niter admission has only increased 5 fold in thirty years!!! I know exactly where you're coming from Mike.I've been running a soul night at Bournemouth Uni for 5 years.Always kept the entry same price,£5. Have always paid my guest dj's and residents. Some have actually refused payment for which i'm grateful but we put back in by offering mince pies etc at our xmas do & it also helps us to get a name dj in occasionally. This year at xmas we have Ted Massey coming down to spin some tunes. Well done to all promoters wherever you are for keeping the scene going for so long.

Yeah Jo. Re who I would appreciate as a paid 'topdj' could b a number of jocks depending on which night etc.I'd love to see Richard searling ,soul Sam, 100club boys etc.obviously whoever is currently riding high on the scene with big sounds in demand. Re. Admin charges etc.many promotors/ dj and don't pay themselves 0wt.often shooting the p.a.kit without any charge/compensatation to themselves ,and often put many hours of unpaid time into the events for our benefit ,I say put the door fee up by a pound and give yourselves a bit more of a comfort zone, if you make a profit pay yourself for your time, nobody is gonna look at this in a poor light, or donate to charity! Some of the best long standing soul clubs were mostly run on a commercially viable basis,Wigan, mecca,Ritz,Stafford,Morecambe pier, kings hall etc.great value, great people, great scene! Very interested.to hear the bristol event gets packed out and may need memberships introduced! 'A change is gonna come'.regards Mike Ingham, rainy kernow.

Already had Soul Sam at Newquay, also Ady Croasdale, and Richard searling , and many more, personally i don't think a big named dj would make for a better night. I also don't think any dj has a following these days, there may be a handful that try to go to hear a certain dj, but not 100s. Being able to dj is more important, using a mic, and putting two records together that 'fit' nothing worse than having a stomper followed by a listener. I wouldn't mind paying a higher door charge myself, when you travel from cornwall the door tax is your smallest expense, it costs us £200 for a night out each time. Fuel Hotel Food drinks ( new outfit ) Lol But for now for Plymouth £5 is fine by us, and if we loose money its still cheaper than travellling up country ;D x
