I have recently read that the Wheel in Manchester (Formerly Twisted wheel) may be closing as it is located on a site that has recently been sold for development. I believe there may be one years timescale left in which to make a visit before any planned 'changes'.
Although I have been to Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca, Torch and Yate etc in the seventies I was not fortunate enough to have visited the Twisted Wheel either in my hey day or since (yes, I did have a hey day and it certainly was some years ago!). I am now considering a trip to visit the Wheel at some point in the coming months. Hopefully others may consider visiting also within the planned timescale prior to property development incorporating the Wheel and surrounding buildings/land.
I am aware that Pete and Cathy (Lyster) are seasoned Twisted Wheel and 'Wheel' Goers and thus shall be pleased if you can perhaps provide some additional information on any such planned development, as well as journey/local hotel, motel advice to those wishing to also attend the Wheel.
Many thanks in advance Pete and Cathy.

SAD BUT TRUE - LOOKS LIKE THIS WILL HAPPEN. THE LEASE IS UNTIL 2014 AND NO PLANNING APPLICATION HAS GONE THROUGH AS YET. THERE ARE TWO EVENTS - THE ALLNIGHTER WHICH IS MAINLY SOULIES AND THE SUNDAY SESSIONS WHICH UNFORTUNATELY HAS ATTRACTED A LOT OF 'SOUL TOURISTS' - IT GETS VERY BUSY BUT A GOOD TIME ON BOTH COUNTS. LOTS OF ACCOMMODATION BUT IT DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO PAY - MINIT HOTEL OR THE LOVELY MALMAISON - LOTS MORE IF YOU GOOGLE POSTCODE. TWO GOOD SITES TO TELL YOU WHAT IS GOING ON - WWW.TWISTEDWHEELCLUB.COM AND WWW.TWISTEDWHEEL.NET -. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ IT - CENTRAL 1169 IS A GOOD BOOK TO REEAD TO GET A FLAVOUR OF HOW THINGS STARTED WAY BACK IN THE DAY. I FIRST WENT IN 1967 AND IT WAS STRANGE GOING BACK WHEN IT REOPENED. IF THIS CLOSES IT IS PETE ROBERT'S INTENTION TO FIND SOMETHING SIMILAR TO RECREATE 'THE WHEEL' BUT OBVIOUSLY IT WON'T BE THE SAME WITHOUT BEING IN THE ORIGINAL BUILDING. WATCH THIS SPACE AS THE FIGHT TO KEEP THE 100 CLUB WORKED. HOPE THIS INFORMATION HELPS BARRY.

Many thanks for providing first hand and first class information as always. I have yet to read the book you mentioned (Central 1169) and congratulate you on attending The original Twisted Wheel Club, as well as the new one following reopening. The unique memories you must have of the club(s) I can only imagine.
As a Construction Professional, with interest in similar developments to enhance our Country, I Shall be perusing the website addresses you have provided and also following the updates in due course.
'Fingers crossed for a continuance, in whatever guise. I am led to believe that 700 or so attend on a Sunday alone, so the venue still remains popular (and I hope profitable).
I shall be deciding on a date for attending The Wheel, and visiting Manchester as well if time allows. Hopefully there will not be too many 'tourists' at the time of the visit(or that I am indeed classed as a tourist myself!).
Many thanks, once again, for providing the information.

JUST HEARD THAT ENGLISH HERITAGE ARE NOW ON BOARD AND THEY ARE GOING TO LOOK AT LISTING THE WHEEL - ONLY PROBLEM IS THE PROCESS CAN TAKE UP TO 6 MONTHS - HOPEFULLY IF THIS IS DONE THE BUILDING CANNOT BE KNOCKED DOWN - KEEP EVERYTHING CROSSED.

This news sounds quite positive and hopefully this will allow planners, developers and all involved in the scheme to 'reconsider plans' and 'make appropriate adjustments' to incorporate 'Manchester's proud historic and music heritage'.
'Wigan Casino' fell foul of planning/development ideas and now only has a 'shrine' (good record label and very appropriate under the circumstances) for ex Northern Soul disciples and interested visitors to attend... not something for the town/city to be proud of. The local economy in Wigan also suffered, when you consider the numbers that attended each week. 'Wigan 'did' have the number 1 nightclub in the world...it certainly has not got the number 1 shopping centre.
Liverpool's Cavern Club Scheme removal has also been a product of the city's planning/developers...this piece of development was again some 'history in the making'... this development was hard to comprehend when you consider what the Beatles gave to the City. No doubt everyone involved with this particular development, felt very proud of themselves after the dust had settled and the day's work done.
Manchester has a long and proud history and does appear to remain a forward thinking City... both of Manchester's football clubs are at the top of the Premier League and they are currently challenging to be the very best in the Country. The shopping Centre's are very popular and, similar to the football popularity, they already certainly assist the local economy on a worldwide perspective. The Munich Air Disaster is always given much respect in Manchester and is always remembered in the correct manner. Another of the City's showcase performances is Coronation Street and the show is still going after how many years? There are many fine examples etc.
In making a decision to 'totally remove The Wheel from its roots' is the talk and actions of those with little respect for Manchester's musical heritage. It is the talk of those that have yet to consider the all round benefits to be gained, in particular by future visitors to The Wheel boosting Manchester's Musical and local visitor economy.
As you are aware I have yet to visit The Wheel, which will involve a stay in Manchester and spending monies in appropriate manner in the locality, I suspect that there are many others from around the World that will be doing the same in the many years to come...if the Wheel still exists...
The Development Scheme should be made wide ranging with designs on Manchester's heritage, providing benefits to local economy and to the Music Industry. Those in the know are aware that visitors from Manchester, amongst other places, visit Detroit and other Cities in the United States of America on a 'Soul Music or Rhythm and Blues Tour' and this passion is quite intense. Manchester has a proud Historic and Music Heritage and has now got a unique opportunity to gain a firm hold in 'Model Management' and raising awareness to this by keeping the faith to it's City.
The City's Planners/Developers could of course, go to Specsavers... I did and it improved my vision.
Thanks for the good news, hope you enjoyed my comments.
Best wishes Barry
