yes business as usual again...we had about 70 people in slightly up on last month..go go is different to most nights not just because of our music policy but because the crowd is made up of youngsters and students aswell as local scooterists and soulies. Some experienced travelling soulies have said this makes it refreshing and add to its 'party' atmosphere...the only drawback is bristol at the weekend doesnt sleep and so some of the crowd dont turn up til nearly 11 !...Its a shame cos they missed 'my friend jacks' great set of very rare british beat and soul (also where are the bristol mods sc?maybe it cos we dont play green onions !)...ian 'wavy tops' mccree came on with a short set of mid tempo soul as his name suggests all on uk issues with original company sleeves...
I came on for my first set next with the few soulies that had turned up early makin use of the room on the dancefloor,i started with some semi knowns but ended playing some faves of my friends on the floor...
John came on at 11 mixing it up with some more british beat and soul and a high point for me was the awesome 'im a good woman' by barbara lynn,a tune i have been outbid on twice in the last couple of weeks !...
The club was starting to fill up by now and there was 3 birthday celebrations so lots making use of the very cheap bar.its heere that i have to confess to the soul police that i broke the law !!....one of the birthdays was a good scooterist friend of mine, danny from the jolly boys.Danny has only missed 1 go go and has supported nearly everynight i do so as i knew he would be there i played his all time favourite tune frank beverlys 'if thats what you wanted'..on a clear vinyl inferno reissue !....i admitted to this on the mic as i am doing on here as we advertise a OVO and i dont wanna pretend to having something i dont.As expected the crowd loved it and the half full floor filled...i kept them there with some classics for the next hal hour finishing on my girlfriends fave two tracks of the moment one of which 'the profiles' being a go go floor filler for the last couple of months despite it nearly clearing the floor at cheltenham last month !
John cam on at 12 for his last yet and completely changed things with some killer reggae and ska...no one left the dancefloor !..his last slightly funky reggae track rocksteady party took him nicely into his last few soul tracks including art freemans 'slipping around with you' on a uk atlantic...hot from the royal mail !
I came back on at 1230 with some motown and northern faves at ten past one we had to finish to a crowd shouting for one more, after all the stompers i left them with a more mellow 'you been so wonderful to me' by diana ross.
Despite attending lots of big nights over the next month inc stoke, berkley and soulfusion i cant wait till the next go go in this great little club, hope to see you there !
