well...what a night!...it went from wondering if we were gonna have enuff money to pay the rent...to wondering why we bother...to being another brilliant nite and musically up there with the best!!
we always knew tonite would be a bit tough numbers wise with so much on around the country and then 'secret affair' were booked to play bristol the same night and alot of our crowd came through the mod/scooter thing in the 80s
after the intial couple of dozen in from the start about 1030 we still only had 30 in ..starting to fret a bit.....by 11 30 upto 50 but an arguement had started on the door about a drunk trying to get in...once that had all calmed down... just after 12 some late secret affair goers had turned up who were regulars and i had told them was ok in adv ,we'd told the landlords back when we started this night at this venue in july not to let anyone in after 12 to stop locals wanting a late drink....this on its own would have been alright but one of the modettes was drunk..too drunk to stand on her own...once more another arguement...starting to think why do we bother...as someone said in a previous thread on soulsource, promoting can be a thankless task at times...after ten minutes or so they eventually left and the sober ones were allowed in....
then i walked through the bar area..lots of familiar faces of djs and collectors talking vinyl and looking through the sales boxes...into the main room were little miss shing a ling was playing a blinder...the crowd was now upto 90...down on last month but still enough to have a good atmosphere...probably 60 people on the dancefloor dancing like no one was watching with not a drink in hand...suited and booted, mini skirts and gogo boots, jeans and tee shirts, skinheads,a 7" green mohican and a french ozzy osbourne looka like in here with friends having a brilliant time...dont suppose anyone had told him us brits use to keep his forefathers locked up in this building 200 years ago!...
bearsy itching to get back on the decks for his second set..(we kept it too half hour sets as we knew there would be late comers)...kym wanting to play just one more ...dancin her arse off behind the decks....then bearsys on...one big northern tune after another bobby paris, gene toones, soul inc!!...kyms now out on the floor herself...i look around before joining them...george mauhood is dancin...dave thorley is dancin...john stapleton is dancing...almost everybody is dancing....this is why we do it...not about egos...just about everybody having a bloody good time!!
after bearsy, myself and john had another half hour set each ....john throwing in a few requested ska/reggae trax before finishing with a couple of 'federal' rockers.'.you can hide' and our unofficial ender baby washingtons 'move on'...2 oclock came and still probably 50 people dancin...wanting more but we thought we'd better finish on time and not push it
so all thats left is to say a massive thanx to our great guests bearsy and kym,to george for bringing kym down and to all our unique crowd especially the travellers from berks, dorset, wiltshire, somerset, gloucester and worcestershire
looking foward to next month already...had some dynamite duos on the decks the last couple of months and were not easing off...next month 'ton of dynamites' dave abbott and dr chris pickles...oh yes!
